How Bartering Led to Networking

Feb 21st 2011, 18:01, by Swapsity

When Jim heard about Swapsity, he was ecstatic! No stranger to bartering, he couldn’t wait to share his past swapping experiences. In the mid-90’s, Jim built an awesome Laserdisc collection on barter and learned valuable lessons about negotiation and networking that remain with him to this day. Here is Jim's story from his recent blog post:

Bartering Led to Networking
Here is a blast from the past! Currently, technology is working faster that we can ever imagine. Looking back to the mid-90’s, I had a great experience that taught me valuable lessons.

Before DVD's came into the market there were these CDs called Laserdiscs (size of an record album) that you could watch movies on. The quality was amazing! You could watch it in letterbox or full screen. Back then, letterbox was something new and many Laserdiscs collectors really liked that. It reminded everyone of watching movies at the theatre and enjoying the clearer picture style.

At that time, I had started to buy a few LD’s and build a collection. As there were some LDs that I didn’t watch that much, I put an ad in the local paper to trade them. Within a week, I began getting phone calls and trading my LDs.

There were so many types of people--from a doctor who had a huge collection to entrepreneurs who did barter and sold some LDs.

I even came across a store that was going out of business and selling all their LDs. At that time, they had movies like Lethal Weapon 2, Aliens and Eiger Sanction. My collection quickly grew and trading those LDs was a cool hobby to have at the time.

I learned many valuable lessons from the art of negotiation and networking to building rapport. These were important experiences that still apply to today’s market whether you're buying a new car, home or searching for items for your home!

Now Jim is taking his passion for barter to Swapsity. He has a wide selection of popular books and DVDs up for grabs and is seeking an editor for a series of articles set to be published. Check out his profile and make him an offer!
